Here's the most powerful thing you can do to protect your money in 2026, and it costs nothing: freeze your credit. A credit freeze blocks lenders from pulling your file, which stops a thief from opening new accounts in your name before the fraud ever starts. Yet most people never do it — even as identity theft hits record highs.
The numbers explain why it matters. The FTC logged more than 1.3 million identity-theft complaints in 2025, part of roughly 3 million fraud cases totaling over $15.8 billion in losses. Javelin's 2026 study put the figure even higher: 18 million victims losing a combined $27.3 billion. Learning how to freeze your credit is the single cheapest defense against being one of them.
A credit freeze — sometimes called a security freeze — restricts access to your credit report at the three major bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
When your file is frozen, a new lender can't pull it. And because almost no bank will approve a new credit card, loan, or line of credit without checking your report first, the application dies on the spot. That's the whole trick: you're not hiding your data, you're locking the door that fraud walks through.
A freeze does not hurt your credit score, and it doesn't touch accounts you already have. Your existing cards, your mortgage, your auto loan — all keep working normally. The freeze only blocks new inquiries.
People mix these up, and the difference matters.
A fraud alert is weaker: it asks lenders to take extra steps to verify your identity, but it doesn't block access, and the basic version expires after one year. A credit lock is a bureau product that works similarly to a freeze but is often bundled into a paid subscription with terms the bureau can change.
A credit freeze is the one backed by federal law. Since 2018, placing and lifting one has been free at all three bureaus, for everyone, with no catch. For pure protection with no monthly fee, the freeze wins.
This is exactly the mindset we built nint around: your financial data should be locked down by default, not rented back to you as a premium feature. nint keeps your transactions, budgets, and balances on your own device rather than on a server that could be breached or sold — the same instinct that makes a credit freeze smart. You have to contact each bureau separately — there's no single button for all three. Online is fastest; budget about 15 minutes total.
You'll need to confirm your identity each time with details like your Social Security number, date of birth, and address. Save every PIN and login somewhere secure — ideally an encrypted password manager, not a note in your phone's cloud backup.
Don't stop at the big three. Consider also freezing your file at NCTUE (which tracks telecom and utility accounts) and ChexSystems (used for new bank accounts) if you want to block fraud in those channels too.
The one tradeoff: when you apply for new credit, you have to lift the freeze first, or the lender gets blocked just like a thief would.
The good news is that thawing is quick and free. Online or by phone, bureaus must lift a freeze within one hour. You can do a temporary lift for a set window, or unfreeze just the one bureau a specific lender uses — ask which one, lift it there, then refreeze when the application clears.
Build the habit: freeze by default, thaw briefly when you're genuinely opening something new, refreeze right after.
Here's the step almost everyone misses. Children have clean, unused credit files — which makes them a prime target, because the fraud can go undetected for years until the kid applies for their first card or student loan.
Federal law lets a parent or guardian freeze a minor's credit for free. If you have kids, freezing their files is one of the highest-value, lowest-effort protections on this entire list.
Knowing how to freeze your credit is one of those rare moves that is completely free, takes 15 minutes, doesn't cost you anything in convenience most days, and shuts down the most common form of financial fraud. In a year when identity theft losses topped $15.8 billion, that's an unreasonably good trade.
A freeze protects the door. The next layer is making sure your own apps aren't quietly leaking the data thieves use to get in. The most private financial data is the data that never leaves your device in the first place.
